Curious Pictures Adds Director
Sean Pecknold to Roster
New York, NY – December 10, 2007 – New York-based live action and animation company Curious Pictures has added Sean Pecknold to its roster of directors. Originally from Seattle, Pecknold brings a music-driven point of view to Curious’ strong roster of talent.
“Sean has beautiful animation and really engaging live-action work, which is an uncommon mix,” says Mary Knox, Executive Producer at Curious Pictures. “I see so much work every day, and when something really makes me perk up I pay attention. He is a young and exciting director with a big future.”
Pecknold is largely self-taught and deeply inspired by his family. “I’ve always been in love with animation, print design and motion graphics,” says Pecknold. “My father is an Emmy-award winning designer and creative director, and he taught me a lot growing up. My brother, Robin, is a musician who has scored many of my animation pieces. My sister is a music writer and my mother is a wonderful teacher. So I was always surrounded by creativity growing up.”
Pecknold’s introduction to film came while he was working as an editor on projects for The History Channel, National Geographic Channel and The Travel Channel. During this time he and a fellow artist, Matt Daniels, formed Milk, a directing collective that created a number of short projects that toured animation festivals.
“I love work that is clever and tells an entire story within one frame,” says the director. “A 30-second spot gives you that much longer to entertain and tell a story, and that’s where advertising is headed—to a world that focuses on associating brands with good stories.”
A spot for Xbox 360 that ran on the Xbox web site and on Xbox kiosks around the world is an example of Pecknold’s love of storytelling in service of brands. Using still images shot with a Nikon D200, Pecknold created the story of Francois, a video-game addict whose love of games began as a child and is enhanced by the newest version of the Xbox 360. The piece, produced for Microsoft through a small Seattle branding and design agency called Barryandgregg, was largely influenced by a short film Pecknold created, “Manquer: A Bicycle Love Story.”
“The agency saw my film, and wanted to use that technique to tell a unique story, one that wasn’t the typically expected video game commercial,” says Pecknold.
Curious Pictures depth of projects, from commercials, to music videos, to long-format programming and even video games, was attractive to Pecknold, and made joining the company a natural progression in his career.
“The work at Curious Pictures is fun, funny and very technical – they cultivate that,” says Pecknold. “I like to borrow from lots of styles and techniques, and Curious Pictures embraces mixed-media storytelling more than anyone else.”
