Norma Toraya, aka Crankbunny, got her start studying sculpture and photography at Syracuse University before heading to Los Angeles for graduate school in the experimental animation department at CalArts. Norma's background inspired the melding of different techniques, including her recognizable hand-drawn painterly style, under-the-camerawork with cut-outs, stop-motion, and live action.
A self-professed workaholic, Crankbunny garnered plenty of attention for the cut-out kitsch found in her "Animals Will Leave Us First" Maritime music video and in her fascinating mixed-media/animated movie, "Lovers Supplant." Her work has been shown at New York's Museum Of Modern Art.
Based in New York, Crankbunny especially enjoys the guessing, intuition, experimentation and flexibility required by the animation process. Her growing self-awareness has also led to the discovery that she's crankiest when hungry.
